Harry Taylor has written an open letter to TATOC members and affiliates asking for their support of a new charity initiative, Give Us Time, which is asking owners and resorts to donate timeshare weeks. These weeks will then be used by returning service personnel and their families allowing them to relax and recuperate after their tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The initiative, supported by Dr Liam Fox MP, is part of Afghan Heroes set up by Denise Harris as a legacy to those who those who had fallen in Afghanistan. You can read the letter here:

Dear members and affiliates

A new charity initiative called Give Us Time has just been launched to provide holidays for recovering armed forces personnel and to help families adjust to life after combat.

Launched last week by former secretary of State for Defence Liam Fox MP, and partnering with charity Afghan Heroes, the initiative is asking timeshare owners and resorts to donate un-used weeks both in the UK and abroad.

These weeks will be used to provide holidays to families and personnel helping them to recover, relax and recuperate after serving in combat.

TATOC thoroughly supports this initiative and urges its member resorts and affiliates to consider donating timeshare weeks to this worthwhile cause.

Donating weeks couldn’t be simpler. Just visit the charity’s website here and complete the online form. The holidays will be available to service personnel from this September onwards.

Afhan Heroes was set up by mothers who had each lost their sons in the Afghanistan conflict. When it was launched in September 2009 one of the missions was to provide support for those who had suffered loss or injury while in theatre. This included the provision of holidays so that families could enjoy quality time together.

The initiative will apply to all those who have lost a loved one or suffered physical injury or mental stress after combat.

Founder of the charity Afghan Heroes Denise Harris explains the reason why the charity is so important. “Afghan Heroes was launched as a legacy to our sons. Following the fantastic support we have received from the general public the charity has grown into a legacy to all the fallen of this terrible conflict in Afghanistan.”

“When we launched Afghan Heroes one of our main objectives are to provide support for families of the fallen and those returning from theatre. I know through personal experience how difficult it can be for those who have suffered loss or injury. Give Us Time is a fantastic initiative and will go a long way to help those who have put their lives on the line readjust to a normal civilian life.”

In a message on the GiveUsTime website, Dr Fox writes: “During my time as Secretary of State for Defense I was extremely heartened to see how we improved the treatment of those who had been physically injured in combat.

“Medical improvements in prosthetics, better physiotherapy and improved social attitudes all contributed to a better chance of rehabilitation. In terms of psychological trauma, the invisible scars of war, we are making progress though perhaps at a slower rate.

“One of the areas where I think there remains room for improvement is the integration of service families into this equation. As a doctor working with the Armed Forces I learned the importance of seeing our personnel not as isolated individuals but as members of a wider family and community dynamic.”

I hope that our member resorts, affiliates and individual members can get behind this initiative and support these brave men and women.

Best wishes
