Spain and Portugal best value for self catering
Self catering can cost up to 80% more in Italy, Greece and Cyprus than Spain and Portugal according to a Post Office survey.
Families are spending more to buy food in supermarkets in Italy, Crete, Corfu and Cyprus while Majorca and Portugal were cheapest, found Meon Villas who carried out the research.
More than 15% of the holidaymakers surveyed had opted for self catering in a bid to save money but many found they went over budget on food purchases.
The Post Office Travel Money survey found that supermarket costs had dropped in Menorca, Gozo and Lanzarote since last year.
Andrew Brown, Post Office head of Travel Money, said: "Although self-catering can be a great way for families to save money, they should choose their destination carefully. Majorca and Portugal are great value options but Greece is looking more expensive.
"Another way that families can ensure they don't lose out on holiday cash is to avoid changing cash at the airport or at overseas ATMs where poor rates and charges will cost them dear."
